How to Answer 'Tell Me About Yourself' (UK Examples)

'Tell me about yourself' is how most interviews open — and a strong answer sets the tone for everything that follows. The trick is to keep it relevant and structured, not to recite your life story.

What they're really asking

They don't want your personal history — they want a quick, confident summary of who you are professionally and why you're right for this role. Keep it to about 90 seconds.

The present–past–future formula

  • Present: what you do now and your current focus.
  • Past: a brief line on the relevant experience that led you here.
  • Future: why this role is the natural next step for you.

Example

I'm a marketing executive with three years' experience in B2B SaaS, currently leading email campaigns that have grown our pipeline by 25%. Before this I worked agency-side, which taught me to move fast across lots of brands. I'm now looking to take on more strategy and ownership — which is exactly what drew me to this role.

Avoid

  • Starting at birth or listing every job.
  • Rambling with no structure.
  • Negativity about a current or past employer.
  • Reciting your CV word-for-word.

Practising your opener out loud makes all the difference. JobPilot UK's AI interview prep helps you rehearse this and the questions that follow, tailored to the role.
