STAR Method: Example Interview Answers (UK, 2026)

If an interviewer asks 'tell me about a time when…', they're asking a competency question — and the STAR method is the cleanest way to answer it. UK employers love STAR because it gives them real evidence of how you behave, not just what you claim.

What STAR stands for

  • Situation — set the scene briefly (where, when, your role).
  • Task — what you were responsible for or the challenge you faced.
  • Action — what YOU specifically did (use 'I', not 'we').
  • Result — the outcome, ideally with a number or clear impact.

Example: 'Tell me about a time you handled conflict'

Situation: In my last role, two team members disagreed over how to split a project, and it was delaying our deadline. Task: As the project lead, I needed to resolve it quickly without damaging the working relationship. Action: I met each person separately to understand their concerns, then brought them together to agree a shared plan that used both their strengths. I set clear owners for each part. Result: We delivered the project two days early, and both colleagues later said the process felt fair. The approach became how our team split work going forward.

Questions STAR works for

  • Tell me about a time you worked under pressure.
  • Describe a time you failed and what you learned.
  • Give an example of when you led a team or project.
  • Tell me about a time you dealt with a difficult customer or stakeholder.
  • Describe a time you had to learn something quickly.

Tips to deliver it well

  • Spend most of your answer on Action and Result — that's what's being assessed.
  • Always quantify the Result if you can ('saved 5 hours a week', 'cut errors by 20%').
  • Keep each answer to 90 seconds–2 minutes.
  • Prepare 5–6 flexible stories that can be reshaped for different questions.
  • Say 'I' for your own contribution, even in team examples.

Practising out loud is what makes STAR answers feel natural. JobPilot UK's AI interview prep generates likely questions for the specific role you're applying to and gives feedback on your answers — so you walk in rehearsed instead of winging it.
