How to Explain a Gap in Your CV (UK)

Career gaps are far more common than they used to be — redundancy, caring for family, health, travel, study, or simply taking a break. What matters isn't the gap itself, but how confidently and honestly you frame it. Here's how.

Do employers actually care about gaps?

Far less than most people fear. UK employers have seen plenty of gaps, especially in recent years. A brief, honest explanation is almost always enough — what they don't like is something unexplained or an obvious attempt to hide it.

How to handle a gap on your CV

  • Be honest — never fake dates to paper over it.
  • Keep it brief: a short line is plenty.
  • Frame it positively — mention anything useful you did, like a course, freelance work or volunteering.
  • For short gaps, using years rather than months can keep your CV clean.
  • For longer gaps, add a one-line entry so it isn't a mystery.

Framing common gaps

  • Redundancy: 'Role made redundant in a restructure; used the time to complete a course in [subject].'
  • Caring responsibilities: 'Career break to care for a family member.'
  • A planned break: 'Planned career break to travel.'
  • Health: keep it brief — 'Personal career break, now fully ready to return.' You're not obliged to share details.
  • Study or freelance: simply list it as you would a role.

Talking about it in an interview

Keep it short and confident — don't over-explain or apologise. Briefly state the reason, then pivot to why you're ready and excited now.

I took a planned break to care for a family member. During that time I kept my skills current with an online course in [X], and I'm now fully focused on getting back into [field] — which is exactly why this role appeals to me.

What not to do

  • Don't lie about dates — it surfaces in reference checks.
  • Don't over-explain or sound defensive.
  • Don't apologise repeatedly — a gap isn't a failure.
  • Don't leave a long gap completely unexplained.
