Common Interview Questions & How to Answer Them (UK)
Most UK interviews reuse a handful of classic questions. Prepare flexible answers to these and you'll handle the majority of what gets thrown at you.
The classics — and how to approach them
- 'Tell me about yourself' — a 90-second present-past-future summary.
- 'Why do you want this role?' — link your skills and goals to what they need.
- 'Why do you want to work here?' — show genuine research about the company.
- 'What's your biggest weakness?' — a real one, plus how you're improving.
- 'Where do you see yourself in five years?' — show ambition that fits the role.
Competency questions
Expect several 'tell me about a time when…' questions. Answer these with the STAR method — Situation, Task, Action, Result — and quantify the result wherever you can.
How to prepare
- Re-read the job description and match your examples to its requirements.
- Prepare 5–6 flexible stories you can reshape for different questions.
- Research the company and have questions ready to ask back.
- Practise out loud, not just in your head.
